[Trailer] Neil Marshall’s ‘Hellboy’ Looks Like a Fun Monster Mash of Comic Book Faithfulness

“Stranger Things” star David Harbour is the title character in Neil Marshall’s Hellboy, and while we were expecting the trailer tomorrow, it has just arrived a day early!

Oddly enough, if the trailer is an accurate indication, Marshall’s rated “R” reboot seems to be tonally in the same vein as Guillermo del Toro’s movies, which is a bit surprising given the film had been promoted as being way darker and more violent than del Toro’s vision for the property. Of course, it’s always possible that the movie itself is much darker than it seems.

The trailer does get bloody at times, so we’re at least expecting a good deal of that.

In any event, this one looks like a lot of fun, and it’s pretty clear to me that Harbour was perfectly cast in the role Ron Perlman first brought to the screen. Meet the new Hellboy below!

Also starring: Milla Jovovich as Nimue, the film’s villain; Ian McShane as Professor Broom; Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio; Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida; and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan with Sophie Okonedo (After Earth), Brian Gleeson (mother!) and Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.

Aron Coleite worked on the latest draft of a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson are the producers. Hellboy is being exec produced by Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Hampe.

Hellboy returns on April 12, 2019.
