“We’re the line in the sand. We fight against the forces of darkness.”
Look. The reality is, we’re always going to be kind of bummed that Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman never got to finish their planned trilogy of Hellboy films, but at the same time, we could do way worse than The Descent director Neil Marshall and star David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) taking over for next year’s reboot. So you won’t find us complaining.
Based on the very first trailer we got today, Marshall’s rated “R” take on the Mike Mignola-created comic book universe is tonally in line with del Toro’s films (more than we were initially told, it would seem), and the trailer suggests a fun movie with a sense of humor about itself. It also teases hints of extreme bloodshed, and you know we’re here for all that.
Also on display in this first trailer? A handful of monsters, including Douglas Tait as comic book character Gruagach. A warthog-like creature from the comic books, Gruagach is glimpsed a couple of times throughout the trailer, as are other creatures that should help to make Marshall’s monster mash a bit more horror heavy than most “superhero” movies.
