In what will be one of the biggest pieces of entertainment news this year, it was announced this week that Sony Pictures has hired Jason Reitman to direct the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, which will be a continuation of the 1989 sequel and will not be connected to Paul Feig’s 2016 film. A day after, a teaser trailer dropped that featured our first look at the original Ecto-1 that’s been stored in a barn for the better part of 30 years, as well as news that we can expect the revival in 2020.
A new story has been circulating, courtesy of the UK’s Daily Mail, that alleges confirmation that all three surviving Ghostbusters will be returning in the new film. While the date of the interview was not shared, their TV crew spoke with Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the first two films, at the For Your Consideration NAACP Image Awards Screening in Beverly Hills.
After reminiscing on his relationship with Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler in the originals, Hudson added: “I miss [Ramis], but his spirit is there.”
“But Ivan Reitman is there and everybody is in.”
“Now whether the studio will do it, I’m the guy who sits by the phone and waits for the call. So if they call, I’ll answer. If not, I’ve got other stuff that I’m doing.”
Again, we don’t know exactly when this interview took place, but we do know that this project has been coming to fruition for several months now as Dan Aykroyd jumped the gun last November in stating: “There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters.”
After decades of rumors, it would be wild to see Hudson, Aykroyd and the elusive Bill Murray return to their respective roles in this new installment that’s rumored to introduce four new “teenage” ‘busters. For now, we wait for more official announcements.
