Rumor: Lakeith Stanfield in Talks to Star in Jordan Peele-Produced ‘Candyman’?

Published

on

We still don’t know whether or not Tony Todd will be back in director Nia DaCosta‘s Candyman, a “spiritual sequel” to the original film that’s being co-written and produced by Jordan Peele, but the website Super Bro Movies is reporting some alleged casting news today. They say, via a source, that Lakeith Stanfield will be starring in next year’s movie.

The site reports, “We have exclusively learned that Lakeith Stanfield is in talks to star as the main character of the film, Anthony, who is being described as a socially pronounced artist in Chicago who researches the urban legend of Candyman. After investigating the killer’s last known whereabouts, strange killings begin to occur around Anthony. The protagonist will serve a role similar to that of Helen Lyle, the main character of the original movie.”

Stanfield, of course, starred in Jordan Peele’s Get Out, so it makes sense that he’d be re-teaming with Peele for this one. But at this time, we must stress that this is only a rumor.

It’s interesting to note that Anthony is the name of the baby from the original Candyman, so if this report is true, it’s entirely possible that Stanfield is playing that same character!

MGM will bring Candyman back to life on June 12, 2020.
