Looks Like ‘Escape Room’ May Become the Next Annual Franchise; Sequel Dated for 2020 Release

Escape Room

It was immediately clear right off the bat that Adam Robitel‘s Escape Room was one horror film that was loaded with franchise potential, and as we learned just last night, we’re (at the very least) getting a sequel real soon. Robitel will return to direct Escape Room 2 for Sony, which is being penned by the returning Bragi F. Schut and produced by Neal H. Moritz.

Plot details are under wraps at this time, but we’ve learned today that Sony will be releasing the film on April 17, 2020, which suggests to us that Escape Room could very well become the next big horror franchise to unleash annual installments. Of course, whether or not Sony has the next Saw on their hands will be determined entirely by ticket sales.

Escape Room, released this past January, pulled in $118.6 million worldwide on a $9m production budget.

The soon-to-be-a-franchise follows strangers who find themselves in a maze of deadly rooms, forced to work together and use their wits to find the clues and escape… or die.
