Stephen King Proposed This Alternate Ending to the New ‘Pet Sematary’

If you haven’t yet seen the new movie, turn away now.

The central villain of Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch’s Pet Sematary, unlike Stephen King‘s novel and the 1989 film, isn’t Gage Creed but rather his older sister Ellie Creed, who ultimately ends up converting her entire family to the undead side. In the final act, Ellie kills her mom who then kills her dad, and the final moments tease that little Gage is the next to die.

It’s a pretty bleak ending to a story that was already insanely bleak, and Stephen King himself had apparently pitched an alternate ending that would’ve been a bit more upbeat.

I talked about an ending where Gage is walking up the middle of the road,” King explained to EW. “We see dawn, and we hear a truck coming, and think, ‘Oh my God, he’s gonna get greased in the road. That’s how this is gonna end!’ Then at the last second, this woman pulls him out of the road and rescues him, and says, ‘Where’s your mommy and daddy?’

And that’s how you end the thing,” he added. “I’m a sucker for a happy ending.”

It’s interesting that King essentially wanted to rewrite his own story to allow for Gage Creed to survive, because he similarly had regretted killing off young Tad Trenton when he wrote Cujo. That novel’s film adaptation allowed Tad to survive the events of the story, a new ending that King had approved. Alas, Pet Sematary 2019 doesn’t let Gage, or the audience, off the hook.

John Lee (False Positive) will direct Mountain Man from a script by Matt Deller.

“John is a brilliant creative mind. We’ve been looking for the right thing to do together since we filmed Pee Wee’s Big Holiday and it’s finally here,” 3:59’s Joe and Nick Manganiello told Deadline. “Very excited to get to work on such weird, wild project with him.”

Film Bridge International is launching sales on the project in Cannes.
