[Box Office] ‘The Intruder’ Opens Strong; ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ and ‘Pet Sematary’ Pass $100M as Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Hits Landmark $250M

Here’s quick belated box office breakdown with two horror films surpassing $100 million worldwide.

First and foremost, Sony Screen Gems’ thriller The Intruder (review) quietly had a strong opening with an estimated $11M domestic take. This is good for #2, beating out the Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron comedy Long Shot. With a budget reportedly in the $8M range, the film needs to see $30m globally to break even. There have been no international numbers reported yet, but we’ll keep updating over the next few weeks.

In the film directed by Deon Taylor’s (Chain Letter), when a young married couple (Michael Ealy and Meagan Good) buys their dream house in the Napa Valley, they think they have found the perfect home to take their next steps as a family. But when the strangely attached seller (Dennis Quaid) continues to infiltrate their lives, they begin to suspect that he has hidden motivations beyond a quick sale.

New Line Cinema and Atomic Monster’s The Curse of La Llorona (read our review), which is part of the Conjuring Universe (even if not marketed as such), hit the $100M milestone in just three weeks. The film would have been an even bigger success had Thanos not snapped his fingers and annihilated all competition. With a reported $9M budget, there will be a sequel to the Michel Chaves-directed horror film that introduced us to The Weeping Woman.

Paramount Pictures’ Pet Sematary (read our review), their modern take of Stephen King‘s novel, also surpassed $100M on a reported $21M budget. It’s not quite the runaway freight train of La Llorona, but it is profitable enough to warrant another trip to sour ground.

Lastly, Jordan Peele‘s social slasher Us (read our review) has finally hit an insane $250M global take on just a $20M budget. The film doesn’t beg for a sequel, but if Peele wanted one, there’s no world in which Universal or Blumhouse say no.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
