Amandla Stenberg Will Star in Universal’s Remake of 1996 Thriller ‘Fear’

We learned earlier this year that Universal is re-imagining Fear, the 1996 thriller that starred Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. In the James Foley-directed film, Wahlberg played David, an initially charming young man whose extreme dark side soon rears its ugly head.

Universal’s new take on the film is being penned by Straight Outta Compton co-writer Jonathan Herman, and Deadline reports today that Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) will star.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps, we’re hearing that the story will this time around be told from a female perspective.

“The original film centered on Witherspoon meeting Wahlberg’s character in what seemed to be a perfect love match — until his darker side emerged and it all went off the rails.”

Brian Grazer returns to produce for Imagine Entertainment.
