Back in 2016, Paul Feig allowed Chris Hemsworth to flex his comedic chops in Ghostbusters, casting him as the dim-witted receptionist for the team. Reflecting on the film in a chat with Variety, Hemsworth credits it for paving the way for subsequent performances in both Ragnarok and Endgame, while also touching upon the reception to the film.
“That whole period I was like, ‘What ownership do you guys have over those characters?’ Oh, you watched the film, therefore you should have a say over where it goes?’ I thought it was very unfortunate and kind of disappointing,” Hemsworth told the site, speaking specifically about the toxic way many Ghostbusters fans reacted to the female-fronted remake.
Hemsworth also noted in the chat with Variety that he would’ve liked to have reprised the role of Kevin in a sequel – funny, considering he almost dropped out entirely.
“The night before I was shooting, I almost pulled out. Three or four weeks prior, Paul said to me, ‘I’m going to write up the character. Don’t worry.’ And then I got the script and nothing had changed,” Hemsworth recalls, noting that he was mostly tasked with improvising in order to make the character more than he was on the page.
The actor adds, “I was really scared walking onto that set. I had no real plan, so I was just feeding off of them, and I just felt ridiculous. So I used that.”
