Producer Confirms That ‘The New Mutants’ Will Undergo Reshoots Ahead of 2020 Release

The Josh Boone-directed The New Mutants has been a troubled production, originally set for release in 2018 but pushed back multiple times to the point that we began to wonder if it was ever going to be released at all. As we recently learned, it’s been delayed yet again now that Disney has acquired Fox; The New Mutants will arrive in theaters on April 3, 2020.

Speaking with Digital Spy, producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that reshoots are to blame.

What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it,” Kinberg told the site. “Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together.”

He continued, “We’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time. So that will be some time this year; we’ll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out.”

Allegedly, the release of the horror-superhero film was originally delayed to make it scarier, with a series of reshoots planned to change the tone and even add a new character.

Will it be PG-13 or rated R when released in 2020? Only time will tell…

In the film, “five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”

The cast includes Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, a mutant with the ability to absorb and channel solar power; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”; Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on; Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, who uses teleportation; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; and Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane, who can turn into a wolf.
