There was a lot to unpack from this past weekend’s Ghostbusters Fan Fest, including the debut of some newly discovered footage. Director Jason Reitman was also on hand to tease next year’s Ghostbusters, a sequel to the original classics.
In the currently untitled third film, a family moves back home to a small town where they learn more about who they are.
Reitman got the audience pumped, especially when he exclaimed his ultimate plan: “I want to scare children.”
While he plans to go scary, he also recognizes the original film is also a good time: “One of my favorite things about movies [in the 80’s] is that they can be funny and scary at the same time.”
If anyone’s questioning the filmmakers’ agenda, their mission statement is that they “wanted to make a love letter to the original movie.”
Speaking of the original movie, Geek Tyrant shares the following bomb that was dropped in the middle of the panel. Jason Reitman told the fans in attendance:
“In making this movie, we found something kind of extraordinary. We went to Sony, and we said, ‘We’d really love to get back into the original dailies from 1984. Do you still have them?’ And we found them. They were in a mine in Kansas, and we shipped the boxes to Burbank. We’ve been going through the footage for reasons I cannot tell you, but along the way we found some really cool stuff.”
The lost footage is shared in the below video, albeit super small. Perhaps some of it will be integrated into Reitman’s movie in some way?
The biggest news of course came three days ago when Sigourney Weaver confirmed her return to the franchise in a chat with Parade, while the site noted that Weaver will also be reuniting with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in Reitman’s movie.
Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things,” IT), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel) and Carrie Coon (Widows) are thus far also attached to star in the new film, set to shoot in five weeks for release on July 10, 2020.
