James Wan Describes ‘Aquaman’ Spinoff ‘The Trench’ as a “Monster Horror Movie”

Yes, the coolest and scariest scene from Aquaman is spawning its own movie.

Before the 2022 arrival of Aquaman‘s sequel, spinoff movie The Trench will bring us back into that particular world, a film centered on the ocean-dwelling race of creatures that made a memorable appearance in James Wan’s hit movie last year. The film is expected to take place after the events of Aquaman, and it looks like it’ll be a straight up monster movie.

We’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much. But definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it. So it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie than it will as a superhero film,” Wan just told ComicBook.com. “But it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.”

Last we heard, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald had been hired to write the script.

Arthur and Mera are not expected to appear in the spinoff.
