Neill Blomkamp Assures That His ‘RoboCop’ Sequel Will Feature the Original Suit

He may not be making that Aliens sequel we’ve all been begging for but Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is most definitely making a sequel to RoboCop, and it’s set to be a follow-up to Paul Verhoeven’s original classic. As we learned last year, Blomkamp is rewriting a script penned by original RoboCop scribes Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner back in the ’80s!

Last we heard, the new movie’s title was RoboCop Returns.

Neumeier had described Blomkamp’s vision earlier this year, “His idea is that it should be the proper Verhoeven… if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after RoboCop… I think that’s what he is trying to achieve.” And Blomkamp himself updated on the project over on Twitter tonight, expressing a similar sentiment.

Script is being written. Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film,” Blomkamp tweeted.

This tweet led to a fan asking if the original RoboCop suit will be used in the new movie, and Blomkamp assured it will be. “1 million% original,” he tweeted in response to the question.

Will Peter Weller also be back, inside that original suit? Only time will tell!

Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.

Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”

Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.

Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.

THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
