Ari Aster Answers a Couple Questions You May Have About ‘Midsommar’ [Spoilers]

This article contains spoilers.

Ari Aster‘s new film Midsommar sends a group of friends to Sweden to take part in a fabled mid-summer festival. As the synopsis notes, what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. During a Reddit AMA today, Aster answered some interesting questions about the film.

As we learn throughout Midsommar, some of the activities take place annually, but the movie also documents a much stranger ceremony that only takes place every 90 years. Chatting on socials, some viewers appear to be confused about the cult’s festivities – are there sacrifices every year or *only* every 90 years? – and Aster clarified the lore during the AMA.

The last ritual of the film is what happens every 90 years,” he explained. “The rest is business as usual.”

Interestingly, he also pointed out that the film concludes before the actual celebration does: “It is suggested that there are more days of celebration to come,” Aster noted. “The movie doesn’t span nine days.” In other words, we haven’t seen *everything* there is to see.

Another thing about Midsommar you may have wondered is who exactly was it that killed Josh while wearing Mark’s skinned face, Leatherface style?

The man wearing Mark’s skin is Ulf,” Aster confirmed. Ulf, you may recall, was the character who was most displeased about Mark having urinated on the ancestral tree.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
