We can’t wait to see what’s next from Ari Aster, the mastermind behind Hereditary and Midsommar, but it sounds like we shouldn’t be expecting another horror movie.
Not right away, at least.
During an AMA session over on Reddit today, Aster was point blank asked what his next movie will be, and he offered up this little tease of the near future:
“Next one will either be a zonky nightmare comedy or a big, sickly domestic melodrama.”
In response to another question, Aster had similarly noted that he’s looking to someday make a full-on comedy, which he says will “hopefully” happen “very soon.”
If you’re looking for more Aster-directed horror films, however, have no fear.
“It might take me a few movies before I wind back around to it, but I love horror and I’m sure I’ll be back,” Aster made sure to also note during the Reddit chat.
As you may recall, Aster had told us just last week that he was “wrestling with two movies” he wanted to make, and that both ideas would fit in with Hereditary and Midsommar as a thematic trilogy of sorts. “I don’t know which one I’m going to do next,” Aster explained to us, “and they would both fit into a trilogy if I decided to announce it as that.”
