‘IT: Chapter Two’ Gets a Harder “R” Rating for “Disturbing Violent Content” and “Crude Sexual Material”

It should come as no surprise whatsoever that Andy Muschietti’s IT: Chapter Two, a sequel to the rated “R” film from 2017, has also received an “R” rating, but indeed it has this week.

While the MPAA handed IT an “R” rating for “violence/horror, bloody images, and for language,” the reasons for IT: Chapter Two‘s rating suggest a darker end to the saga…

Chapter Two has been rated R for “disturbing violent content and bloody images throughout, pervasive language, and some crude sexual material.”

Sounds like Muschietti pushed the horror even further for this one, which makes sense given he’s now working with adult actors. Expect a scarier, bloodier film in September!

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, IT: Chapter Two brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Mama) stars as Beverly Marsh, James McAvoy (Glass) as Bill Denbrough, Bill Hader (HBO’s “Barry,”) as Richie Tozier, Isaiah Mustafa (“Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”) as Mike Hanlon, Jay Ryan (“Mary Kills People”) as Ben Hanscom, James Ransone (“The Wire”) as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Andy Bean (“Swamp Thing”) as Stanley Uris.

Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Martell as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie, Finn Wolfhard as Richie, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben.

Pennywise will return in theaters and IMAX worldwide on September 6, 2019.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
