Director Andre Ovredal‘s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will bring several of artist Stephen Gammell’s illustrations from the three-book series to the screen for the very first time this weekend, and today Fandango shares a little featurette video wherein producer Guillermo del Toro digs into the process of faithfully recreating those monsters in the real world.
“What we tried to emulate with the creatures was the black and white feeling of the illustrations,” del Toro explains. “So we went for the desaturation in the visuals. All of them.”

In Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, “It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.”
Scary Stories arrives in theaters on August 9th, 2019.
