Kiefer Sutherland Details Insanely Violent Unused Kill Scene Footage from ‘The Lost Boys’

The Lost Boys (1987) Directed by Joel Schumacher Shown: Kiefer Sutherland

Even though Joel Schumacher‘s 1987 vampire coming-of-age horror The Lost Boys is already rated “R”, there was apparently still some gore left on the cutting room floor.

Speaking to Yahoo!, star Kiefer Sutherland talks about his favorite scene that was actually butchered quite a bit in the editing room.

“There was a scene that actually didn’t make the movie that I was really, really excited about, mainly because it was just so violent I couldn’t believe that we were doing it,” Sutherland tells the site.

“It’s sort of in the movie — they cut around it — but there was a guy on a beach and he was bald and they had made a prosthetic cast of his head. And the part of the scene that I loved the most was literally, it was like a cake: I ate the whole back of his head off and blood just went everywhere. I had been directed to just smile like a child having cake, and the two images were so frightening and scary.”

As you can see below, this sequence indeed is in the film, cut around by the filmmakers. Even though Yahoo! refers to this as a “deleted scene”, this sounds more like unused footage that we’ll likely never get to see. I’d love to know Schumacher’s take on why it was cut down and if it was a personal choice, a demand by the studio, or an order from the dreaded MPAA.
