In the wake of the Dark Universe’s failure, Universal is now setting their sights on smaller-scale reboots of some of their iconic monster properties, kicking off with Blumhouse and director Leigh Whannell‘s (Saw, Insidious, Upgrade) The Invisible Man. Elisabeth Moss stars in next year’s film, and Entertainment Weekly provides us with our first look today.

Here’s the full plot rundown:

“Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid).”

“But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.“

Whannell, who also wrote the film, explained to the site, “I wanted to kind of… make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man. Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before.”
