Elisabeth Moss stars in Universal, Blumhouse and director Leigh Whannell‘s (Saw, Insidious, Upgrade) The Invisible Man, a new take on the classic horror film arriving next year.
The trailer has been unleashed today, presenting a movie that looks to be everything the planned “Dark Universe” was not. This isn’t an action movie but rather a straight up horror film, with Whannell injecting his own unique voice into the proceedings and delivering a new take on the material that focuses on intimate character work rather than universe-building thrills.
If the official trailer is any indication of what’s in store for us next February and beyond, it seems to me like Universal has finally figured out what to do with their classic monsters. The Invisible Man looks to be the start of a more horror-focused, filmmaker-driven approach to bringing those monsters back to life on a bit of a smaller scale, and that’s music to our ears.
Also take note of that Upgrade-style action and violence. You just love to see it!
Here’s the full plot rundown:
“Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid).”
“But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.“
Whannell, who also wrote the film, explained to the site, “I wanted to kind of… make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man. Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before.”
