With The Grudge hitting theaters this Friday, Bloody Disgusting’s “The Boo Crew” Podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify) sat down with director Nicolas Pesce to talk about the R-rated sequel, which takes place in the same universe/time period as the other English-language films.
While the new film, which stars Andrea Riseborough as a detective who investigates a serious of suspicious deaths all stemming from one house, appears to be yet another remake, it’s actually a sequel that’s tied directly to the previous films. The new movie is set in America, which Pesce would explore changing if he were to make another installment.
“I do, but they sorta involve spoilers,” Pesce told the Boo Crew when they asked if he had any ideas for sequels. “I think the overarching thing would be to take it to more places than just Japan and America, and potentially even leave the modern era.”
“This is something to me…the Grudge is not a thing that happened once, it’s been happening forever,” he adds. “It’s just a matter of revealing when and where that happened. I think that there’d be something cool in going way far back and doing something that’s less contemporary and seeing what shape this sort of thing has taken the form of in other forms and other places.”
It would be interesting to see if the curse can latch onto someone outside of a house…
