Sony’s Masters of the Universe has once again been delayed, Deadline reported over the weekend. It’s off Sony’s schedule entirely, no longer releasing on March 5th, 2021.
Interestingly, Sony’s Tom Holland-starring adaptation of the hit video game Uncharted has been moved into that release slot, pushing Masters of the Universe out.
Uncharted had originally been dated for December 18, 2020.
Last we heard, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) is set to be our new He-Man in the new live-action Masters of the Universe movie, being directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee (Band of Robbers). And we had heard back in October that Sony was exploring the idea of potentially bringing the film direct to Netflix, rather than to movie theaters
Netflix has the animated “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” and an upcoming “Masters of the Universe” series from Kevin Smith, along with an entirely different animated series also in the works, so it may end up being the perfect home for Sony’s reboot.
The movie will be based on the beloved Mattel toyline, which spawned a successful animated TV series (1983-85) as well as the 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. The property centers on the warrior He-Man, the last hope of a magical land called Eternia.
Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, as well as DeVon Franklin are producing, with David S. Goyer (who wrote the first draft) executive producing.
Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Men in Black: International, Iron Man) penned the script.
