The story of a group of youngsters discovering their special powers while locked up in a facility, The New Mutants is inherently a very Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors-esque tale, and the most recent trailer for Josh Boone‘s upcoming superhero-horror movie seemed to make it pretty clear that those inspirations were being celebrated rather than avoided.
Collider visited the set of The New Mutants back in 2017 and they just posted their report this week, and their interview with Boone reveals that he’s definitely a Dream Warriors fan.
And yes, The New Mutants is essentially his take on that beloved sequel.
“I’d say biggest influences for this movie were [One Flew Over the] Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining and Dream Warriors. I do love Dream Warriors, I loved the first [Nightmare on Elm Street] as well, but this is very much a rubber reality horror movie for the first about 75% of the movie and then it becomes something else,” Boone explained to the site.
He added, “It follows the logic of those early Wes Craven movies and all that.”
Boone also assured, “It’s a supernatural horror movie. I’d say this is pushed as far as you could push a PG 13. We’ve pushed stuff as far as we could push it.”
The New Mutants and their powers will finally be unleashed on April 3, 2020.
