Update: A source close to Denver and Delilah tells us that the project is actually no longer in development due to complicated rights issues.
Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that Charlize Theron‘s Denver and Delilah Productions is developing a potential series based on the 1996 feature film The Frighteners.
Originally planned as a possible “Tales From the Crypt” film sequel, The Frighteners was directed by Peter Jackson and starred Michael J. Fox as a man who discovers he can communicate with the dead and uses his gift to con people. It also starred horror greats Jake Busey, Dee Wallace, Jeffrey Combs and the late R. Lee Ermey.
We’re told that Theron’s Los Angeles-based production house has been developing a series over the past year and is also exploring the possibilities of a film. We’re told that this new take could be “stripped of humor”.
Before everyone freaks out, it’s worth noting that Denver and Delilah Productions is behind David Fincher’s phenomenal Netflix series, “Mindhunter”.
The Frighteners is something a cult film with horror fans even though it was a box office failure, recouping less than the entire budget. Still, the concept is as fresh as it was in 1996 and could make for a great series or even reboot. Watch this spot for news on any movement as it comes in.
