ICYMI: Bong Joon Ho is Developing an Action/Horror Film as One of His Next Projects!
South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is one of the hottest directors in the world right now, with his most recent film Parasite winning four Academy Awards last night. Most notably, Parasite became the very first foreign language film to win Best Motion Picture of the Year, and it also took home Best International Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
What’s next? Back in November, you may recall, Bong Joon Ho had teased in a chat with Variety that he was developing two different movies, one of which is an action-horror film!
He told the site, “One is a Korean-language one, and the other one is an English-language one. Both projects are not big films. They’re the size of Parasite or Mother.”
“The Korean film is located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action. It’s difficult to define the genre of my films.”
As reported by Indiewire today, Bong Joon Ho told press backstage at the Academy Awards last night that both films are still in the works, and won’t be impacted by his Oscar wins.
“I have to work. It’s my job. So I’ve been working for the past 20 years, and regardless what happened at Cannes and Oscars, I had been working on two projects before then, I’m continuing to work on them, nothing has changed because of these awards,” Bong told the press. He again noted, “One is in Korean and one is in English.”
Most of Bong Joon Ho’s films have some horror elements in them, but the closest he’s come to making a full-on horror film would have to be The Host, arguably one of the best monster movies ever made. The 2006 film had elements of both horror and action in it, so if that film was any indication of what he can do within those arenas, we’re in for a real treat.
Then again, what *isn’t* a treat when Bong Joon Ho is involved? More as we learn it!
Described as “Ted meets ET,” David Mikalson’s raunchy comedy Goblin is being brought to life over at A24, and Will Forte (“The Four Seasons”) is now in talks to star.
Deadline first reported the news this afternoon.
Kenneth Branagh has been cast to voice the titular Goblin in the upcoming A24 movie, with the character said to be “green-colored” as well as “anatomically correct.”
Skyler Gisondo (Superman) is reportedly playing the Goblin’s human best friend.
The mysterious project sounds a bit like films including A Gnome Named Gnorm and more recently, Frankie Freako, though it’s important to note that it’s not billed as a horror movie.
Deadline details, “After [Mikalson] hatched the idea to make an outrageous buddy comedy about a goblin, using a practical puppet and operating outside the Hollywood system, his script quickly got him a rep team. While others might have eyed the raunchy comedy as a writing sample or planned to wait to see the micro-budget version Mikalson has been directing in Kentucky, A24 jumped all over it. The hot indie essentially has agreed to finance a full feature.”
“There was a lot of interest, but A24 came with what Mikalson really wanted, after spending all his money crafting the puppet title character: they acquired the movie and agreed to let him make it with a significantly increased budget than what he had left after creating the anatomically correct title character,” Deadline’s report goes on to explain.
What does the titular Goblin actually look like? Well, a cake that Mikalson had whipped up for his reps might give us our first look at what to expect. Deadline explains the photo you’ll see down below, “Take a look at the cake he commissioned with Marc Gravelle at Cake Art in West Hollywood, to present to his reps as thanks for making his dream come true.”
