It’s been a tremendous couple of years for fans of the 1988 Canuxploitation cult classic B-horror film, The Brain. In 2019, it finally saw its first ever Blu-ray release (via Shout Factory–which this author also contributed to) and next month Paul Zaza’s official score for The Brain will get its first ever release.
Thanks to our friends over at Terror Vision Records, Zaza’s synthy score will be available on *limited edition* cassette and as a beautiful, 2x LP set. To help celebrate the release, Terror Vision is also releasing a newly designed t-shirt and enamel pin as part of a larger Brain bundle. Oh my!
“I was very surprised that anyone even remembered that film” composer Paul Zaza admits to us, “much less wanted to hear the music from it.” And as it turned out, digging that deep into the archives to find the recordings in the first place proved difficult. “Just finding the tracks and restoring them was a huge challenge,” says Zaza. “Very time consuming and required a lot of “work-a rounds.” All things considered, it went together seamlessly.”
We reached out to Terror Vision to find out what motivated them to want to embark on this project to release the obscure score to this even more obscure B-film. “I wanted to release The Brain because I’ve been obsessed with the flick since I was 8-9 years old” they told us. “I’ve literally had the theme song stuck in my head for almost 30 years!” Same here, you guys. Same here.
This release is packed full of music from The Brain sessions including six bonus tracks! A highlight cut for me is “Right Now” which is a full on 1980s pop synth rocker. A small piece of “Right Now” appears in the film as a song on the radio that our main character, Jim Majelewski, listens to during his morning drive to school.
The Brain has steadily maintained a small yet faithful fan base over the last few decades, so we’re all excited to see it get the reissue + re-master treatment it most definitely deserves.
