Last night, director James Mangold took us back to 2017 and shared some really cool goodies from his R-rated Wolverine standalone movie, Logan (read our review), which would help open the door for the success of Deadpool.
Logan, which is easily one of the best comic book movies ever made, takes place in a future where mutants are nearly extinct. Old man Logan (Hugh Jackman), best known as X-Men’s Wolverine, is acting as a caregiver to an extremely dangerous Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), a mutant who is slowly losing his mind and putting mankind in immediate danger.
In a shocking sequence that takes place in a Las Vegas casino, Xavier has a psionic attack that causes everyone to be stuck frozen, unable to move. Everyone except Logan. The mutant goes berserker and slowly claws his way to the rescue, leaving several dead and blood all over the casino carpets.
As part of a watch party last night, Mangold shared the sequence’s previz, which details the interesting way he achieved the psionic effect.
“Because this film was made for much less than other tent pole films, we had to find new ways to achieve vfx,” he tweeted out. “The psionic attack was largely created by shaking the camera like crazy & then using a shake-reduction app to make the shake disappear but retaining the smeary look.”
Mangold also confirmed that there were never any plans for Logan to don his famous yellow/blue/brown Wolverine costume.
