Ari Aster Teases That His Next Movie Will Be a Very Long “Nightmare Comedy”

Just about one year ago, in the direct wake of Midsommar‘s release, Ari Aster had teased during a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything session that his next movie would either be a “zonky nightmare comedy” or a “big, sickly domestic melodrama,” noting at the time that both projects could fit into a thematic trilogy of sorts with both Hereditary and Midsommar.

Aster has also described the former project as an “anxiety comedy” and “an absurdist, evil comedy,” and it sounds like that one’s going to be the next movie he brings to life.

Speaking to UC Santa Barbara’s students in an interview with the Associated Students Program Board last week, reported by Daily Nexus, Aster again teased that he’s working on a “nightmare comedy,” and that he just completed a new draft of that script. Providing some new information, Aster noted that the film will be even longer than Midsommar‘s extended cut.

“All I know is that it’s gonna be four hours long,” Aster stated.

Without hearing the interview for ourselves – all we’ve been provided with is a transcription – it’s hard to know how serious Aster was being in regards to the film’s length, but it’s worth noting that his films have been getting longer and longer. Hereditary clocked in at 2 hours, 7 mins, Midsommar at 2 hours, 28 mins, and Midsommar‘s extended cut at 2 hours, 51 mins.

More as we learn it.
