First Look: IFC Midnight Warms Up to Body Horror ‘Hatching’, Which Utilizes Animatronics!

IFC Midnight, who has been on somewhat of a roll with The Wretched and the forthcoming Relic, has beaten out rival bids to acquire North American to Finnish coming-of-age body horror Hatching, reports Screendaily out of Cannes.

Bloody Disgusting scored the first image from Hatching, which centers on Tinja, a 12-year-old gymnast desperate to please her mother, a woman obsessed with presenting the image of a perfect family to the world through her popular blog.

“One night, Tinja discovers a strange egg. She hides it and keeps it warm until it hatches. What emerges is beyond belief…”

Ilja Rautsi wrote the screenplay, and Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkila, Jani Volanen, Oiva Ollila, and Reino Nordin star.

Doing some digging, we learned that a birdlike creature is hatched and Tinja names it Alli and hides it in her closet. She feeds the bird vomit and it gradually transforms into Tinja’s doppelganger. “Tinja’s buried aggression and jealousy pushes Alli into increasingly violent attacks until no one is safe.”

Here’s something exciting to note. Star Wars, Jurassic World and Prometheus veteran Gustav Hoegen serves as animatronics(!) designer, and effects make-up designer Conor O’Sullivan has worked on “Game of Thrones”, X-Men: First Class and The Hours.

The plan is to first launch Hanna Bergholm’s feature directorial debut at a major international festival in 2021 before releasing it in theaters and on VOD platforms.

Released by Eli Roth’s label The Horror Section last year, Joe Begos (VFW, Christmas Bloody Christmas) horror movie Jimmy and Stiggs is getting an official spinoff movie.

Sebastián De Caro has acquired the Argentine spin-off rights to Jimmy and Stiggs from The Horror Section, and his spinoff movie will follow new characters in Argentina.

The title? Burger Night: Luli, Magda & Lore. Eli Roth and Joe Begos will Executive Produce the film, which centers on the same alien threat from Jimmy and Stiggs.

Variety reports this afternoon that the film will feature an all-female cast.

Agostina Palazzolo (“Ciclón), Agustina “Papry” Suásquita (Netflix’s “Envious”) and Maia Tarcic (“Letters to My Ex”) will star in Burger Night: Luli, Magda & Lore.

“I am thrilled with the cast — these are women of extraordinary talent, true cinema lovers, brave and wild. They are going to surprise everyone. Each one understands her character perfectly and they all fell in love with the original material,” Sebastián De Caro said.

In Jimmy and Stiggs

A perfect storm of lousy news sees out-of-work filmmaker Jimmy spiral into a bender, during which he claims to have been abducted by aliens. Fearing their return, he contacts his old friend Stiggs to help him gear up for war. Begos stars alongside Matt Mercer (Contracted), practical alien puppets, and a whole lot of gore captured on 16mm film.

Daniel Kurland wrote in his review, “The world needs more playful, gonzo small-scale-yet-apocalyptic horror films like Jimmy and Stiggs. It’s a movie that has constant tricks on display and perpetually sprays blood in the audience’s face, but there’s an earnest center to it all.”
