Our weekly box office reports here on Bloody Disgusting have gotten very interesting throughout the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with independent genre films like The Wretched and Becky topping the charts thanks to profitable runs on the newly revived drive-in circuit. But it’s not a new release genre movie that topped the box office this past weekend…

First released in theaters way back in 1993, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park was #1 at the box office over the weekend, scaring up $517,642 in 230 theaters (via Forbes).

Number two this past weekend? Spielberg’s Jaws, which made $516,366 from 187 theaters. Yes, it was Spielberg vs. Spielberg at the box office. And, well, Spielberg won.

Other movies currently in release at drive-ins and the few theaters that are open across the US include new releases like The Hunt and The Invisible Man, as well as classics including The Goonies, Back to the Future and E.T. The numbers for these releases aren’t actually being reported by sites like Box Office Mojo, which currently lists new horror film Followed at the top of this past weekend’s charts. That film, however, made $127,000, considerably less than what was made by other films whose numbers have been a bit harder to track down.

It seems yet another Summer of Spielberg is upon us, and it’s only fitting that Jaws is celebrating 45 years by once again making a splash at the summer box office. The 1975 masterpiece is, after all, the film that paved the way for the entire Summer Blockbuster season as we know it today. The more things change, the more they seem to stay exactly the same.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
