Dave Franco’s Horror Movie ‘The Rental’ Tops Weekend Box Office With $420,000

IFC continues dominating the drive-in box office with brand new genre offerings, with Forbes reporting that Dave Franco‘s The Rental topped the charts over the weekend.

Released mostly into drive-in theaters across the United States, 251 theaters in total, Franco’s directorial debut scared up an impressive $420,871 to easily win the weekend.

Box Office Mojo indicates that the second and third spots on the weekend charts were occupied by Relic and The Wretched, the latter having now made $2 million worldwide.

Alison Brie (“GLOW”), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Sheila Vand (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) and Jeremy Allen White (“Shameless”) star in The Rental, a sort of low-key slasher film that sees Franco and co-writer Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas) playing with the sub-genre’s conventions and expectations. It’s virtually not a slasher movie at all until the moment it suddenly becomes one, with the increased focus on character development adding welcome depth to a type of movie that normally favors gory slayings over all else.

Here’s the official plot rundown…

The Rental is a character-driven horror thriller about two couples who rent a vacation home for what should be a celebratory weekend get-away.

“Two couples looking to celebrate their seed money from a new business venture embark on a weekend getaway to a seemingly perfect house they’ve booked online. But what begins as a festive weekend for the four close friends turns into something far more sinister as secrets they’ve kept from each other are exposed and paranoia grows that they may not be alone.”

The film is also now available for VOD streaming.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
