For Real This Time, An Actual ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel Now in the Works from Bad Robot and Paramount!

It’s now been well over 10 years since the found footage film Cloverfield brought a giant monster into New York City, the 2008 film subsequently spawning a loosely connected universe of movies that has thus far included the excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane and the not-so-excellent The Cloverfield Paradox. But what about an actual, proper, Cloverfield 2, you ask?

We’re finally getting one, THR reports tonight, as J.J. Abrams‘ company Bad Robot has hired Joe Barton to write the script for what’s being described as a true Cloverfield sequel!

THR notes that the Bad Robot/Paramount sequel will not be a found footage film. The site also notes, “Details of the take are being kept hidden under Central Park.”

Up to this point, Cloverfield “sequels” have essentially been unrelated movies with loose ties to director Matt Reeves’ 2008 movie, with various other movies including Overlord and last year’s Underwater being *rumored* installments in the universe that turned out to not actually be. That’s how loose and ill-defined the universe quickly came to be, with The Cloverfield Paradox essentially explaining that a rip in the space-time continuum spilled all kinds of monsters out into all kinds of different timelines. And, well, that’s been the “Cloverfield Franchise” thus far, the follow-up films taking a “it’s not a Cloverfield movie… until it is… sort of” approach.

But it sounds like this time around Bad Robot and Paramount are dedicated to making a true follow-up to Cloverfield, hopefully with a viral marketing campaign we can get lost in.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
