‘The Last Frankenstein’: An “Existential Slasher” Take on the Classic Story Rises This Halloween [Trailer]

There have been countless takes on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein over the years, and there will undoubtedly be countless more before we all shuffle off this mortal coil. It is, after all, one of the most iconic horror tales of all time, imbued with a truly timeless appeal.

Up next is The Last Frankenstein, which will be premiering via the Underground Cinema Film Festival out of Dublin, Ireland, on September 3rd, to be followed by its theatrical premiere at the historic Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, NY, on October 23rd, we’ve learned.

From Gila Films, The Last Frankenstein centers on Jason Frankenstein (William Barnet), last of his family line. Buried in a dormant life and a dead end relationship, Jason finds himself approaching mid-life with little progress to show towards carrying forward his ancestors’ experiment. But after a creature from his past brutally reappears, he is catalyzed to finally complete his work. With the help of a pair of drug dealing paramedics and a nurse with a shady past, he sets down the blood-soaked path to create a living being from the bodies of the dead.

The film has been described as an “existential slasher,” one that “combines in-depth character study with all the blood, gore, and terror that are hallmarks of horror cinema.”

The press release hypes, “Heavily influenced by cinema of the late-50s through mid-80s, the film overflows with mid-century locations, practical special effects, and vintage aesthetic, and features appearances by two veteran genre actors: Jim Boelsen (Strange Behavior) and, in his final performance, Robert Dix (Forbidden Planet).”
