This week marks the start of a brand new year, and we’ve got a whole lot of horror to look forward to in 2022. This month’s biggest release is of course the return of the Scream franchise, but that’s not until the second week of January 2022. What about the first one?

Here’s all the new horror you can expect from January 3-9, 2022!

First up, Hotel Poseidon has made its way onto the ARROW streaming service today, now streaming on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Xbox, Samsung (US), Android TV, iOS, Android & web.

In this one, “David reluctantly pretends to be the manager of Hotel Poseidon, where fungus covers the walls and comments such as “faded glory” and “has seen better times” completely fall short to describe this establishment. He wanders the corridors of his personal Overlook Hotel like a zombie, being a passive spectator to what happens around him. Whether it’s clients without cash, his mother castrating him with her sharp tongue or the recently deceased aunt in the hallway whose pension kept the place going.

“David will gradually lose his balance and tumble into a waking nightmare, in which his hotel is transformed into an existential purgatory. With inner demons on the booze, lustful creatures tempting his lonely soul to sin and a big plunge into the proverbial metaphysical shithole, David can expect some strong comments on Trip Advisor.”

You’ll find it exclusively over on ARROW’s streaming service. Watch the trailer below.

Jason Reitman’s legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been playing in theaters for a while now, thus far scaring up $184.7 million at the worldwide box office. It’s now coming home, with the sequel to the original classic making its Digital debut on Tuesday, January 4.

The film will then make its way to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on February 1, 2022, and we’re also getting a massive Ghostbusters Ultimate 4K Ultra HD collection on that date.

In the new movie, “When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.” And yes, the original Ghostbusters are back to bust some ghosts.

Also on Tuesday, last year’s horror movie The Stairs begins streaming exclusively on Screambox, the all-horror streaming service that is now powered by Bloody Disgusting.

Beginning January 4, 2022, you can stream The Stairs *only* on Screambox!

If you sign up for Screambox today, you get your first 30 days free.

“In 1997, a young boy is out hunting with his grandfather (Schneider), when he stumbles upon a mysterious staircase deep in the forest. The subsequent disappearance leaves locals baffled as to the fate of the wayward pair. Twenty years later, a group of hikers set off on an ambitious trail, taking them deep into a secluded stretch of woods. Overcome with the beauty of their surroundings, they are blinded to a sinister presence lurking just beyond the trees. As the mountain terrain pulls them deeper, the group unknowingly stumbles upon a long-forgotten evil and find themselves coming face to face with the thing that nightmares are made of.”

Netflix is bringing a brand new original horror movie to the table this Thursday, January 6th. It’s called The Wasteland, a Spanish horror movie from director David Casademunt.

In the film, “A 19th century family living in seclusion is visited by an evil being that feeds on fear. Can little Diego save his mother from the beast – and herself – before it’s too late?”

Preview the mysterious thrills and chills by checking out the official trailer.

Two new horror movies are on the way this Friday, January 7th, including IFC Midnight’s See for Me, wherein visually impaired actor Skyler Davenport stars as a blind house sitter.

Meagan wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting out of Tribeca this year, “It’s a simple story that’s stunningly executed.” She also calls it a “well-crafted and propulsive thriller.”

In the film from director Randall Okita, “Sophie, a young blind woman house-sitting at a secluded mansion, finds herself under invasion by thieves seeking a hidden safe. Her only means of defense: a new app called “See For Me.” It connects her to a volunteer across the country who helps her survive by seeing on her behalf. Sophie is connected to Kelly, an army veteran who spends her days playing first-person shooter games. Sophie is forced to learn that if she’s going to survive the night, she’ll need all the help she can get.”

You’ll find the trailer below.

Also releasing this Friday is The Kindred, where secrets never stay buried, and the past always comes back to haunt you. Vertical Entertainment brings it to select theaters and VOD.

In the film, “After her father’s suicide, a young mother investigates what led to his death. But when she is haunted by spirits and unearths an unsolved mystery from 30 years ago, she discovers a dark family history that could prove deadly for her child.”

The Kindred was written by Christian J. Hearn, and directed by Jamie Patterson.

Begin uncovering the past with the official trailer below.

“Crystal Lake”: Kevin Williamson and Bryan Fuller Planned an “Hour Long Chase Episode”

Published

We learned earlier this week that “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller is no longer the showrunner of A24 and Peacock’s Friday the 13th TV series “Crystal Lake,” with A24 choosing to “go a different way with the material.” What does that mean? It means A24 is still planning on bringing a Friday the 13th series to life, but the overall vision will likely change.

Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) had been on board to write an episode of the “Crystal Lake” series, and Williamson took to Twitter today to tease some of those original plans.

Williamson writes, “Bummin’ hard, so sorry I won’t be a part of what would have been an epic Bryan Fuller show. Your pilot was so beautifully realized. A gorgeous portrait of a mother unraveling in her grief. Not to mention bloody horrific!”

He adds, “I was so looking forward to our hour long chase episode!

Kevin Williamson is of course known for writing incredible slasher movie chase sequences, including the ones seen in the original Scream and Scream 2, as well as I Know What You Did Last Summer and last year’s Sick. It’s hard not to imagine how cool an hour-long Friday the 13th chase episode could be in Williamson’s hands, but alas, it’s not happening anymore.

The silver lining? Williamson is directing the next installment in the Scream franchise.

The director of Cube, Splice and several episodes of “Hannibal,” Vincenzo Natali also took to Twitter this weekend to give us a taste of the “Crystal Lake” series we’ll never see.

Natali tweets, “I have read the first two episodes. Bryan Fuller’s Crystal Lake was well on its way to becoming another Hannibal-level reinvention that was simultaneously beautiful, sad, poetic, funny and horrifying. I mourn its passing.”

A24 and Peacock are now searching for a new showrunner for the series. Stay tuned.

Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela Voorhees. Original Friday the 13th final girl Adrienne King had even signed on for a recurring role in the planned A24 television series.
