This month has seen the release of two horror movies in theaters, from very different ends of the horror spectrum. First up we had the period werewolf movie The Cursed, released in theaters on February 18, and then this past weekend saw the release of horror-comedy Studio 666 – the latter film a gory blast of blood-soaked fun starring the Foo Fighters.
Directed by BJ McDonnell (Hatchet 3), Studio 666 opened in 2,306 theaters over the weekend, the R-rated horror movie scaring up $1,580,000 at the domestic box office thus far. That’s about on par with last week’s opening weekend numbers for The Cursed, which over this weekend was bumped into the #11 spot on the box office charts with another $1 million made.
To date, The Cursed has howled its way to $3.6 million here in the States.
Studio 666 is currently sitting in the #8 spot on the domestic charts, while the new Scream movie – coming to digital tomorrow! – is still holding in there in the #10 spot this week.
The domestic gross for Scream is now at $79.2 million, with the film’s worldwide total hitting $137.6 million as of this past weekend. Another sequel has already been ordered up.
If you want more original horror in theaters, it goes without saying, get out there and support films like The Cursed and Studio 666. Both films are playing nationwide right now. The one-two punch represents something of an experiment for horror here in early 2022, but alas, it’s yet another reminder that smaller original horror movies tend to struggle at the box office.
If we’re not supporting them, well, expect more sequels and more remakes…
