We don’t yet have a release date but Eli Roth‘s Borderlands is on the way soon, with Lionsgate debuting some first-look footage during their CinemaCon presentation last night.

A handful of reactions to the footage hit Twitter last night, with Collider’s Steven Weintraub tweeting that the 30-second sneak peek at Eli Roth’s Borderlandslooks like the video game has come to life.” Weintraub’s tweet continues, “Also heard Jack Black as Claptrap. He sounds like Jack with an electronic twist. Can’t wait to see more.”

@WillBrozInc tweeted out of CinemaCon last night, “Borderlands looks like it’s going to be an absolute BONKERS ride. And I can’t wait for it.”

So what exactly was shown? The Hollywood Reporter recaps

“The first footage for Borderlands has arrived — and just like the immensely popular video game series, it was spectacular. Lionsgate showed approximately a minute of electric footage that showcased Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett as she’s never been seen before, in a fire engine-red wig, toting a gun and fighting her way through a vibrantly colored cityscape. Kevin Hart also appeared, as did Jack Black voicing the robot Claptrap that unexpectedly takes a bullet from Blanchett’s gun with a punchline to follow.”

Expect a release date and the first teaser trailer soon!

The ensemble cast for the video game movie includes Jack Black as Claptrap, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi.

Edgar Ramirez, Janina GavankarCheyenne Jackson, Charles Babalola, Benjamin Byron Davis, Steven Boyer, Ryann Redmond, and Haley Bennett also star.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Lionsgate’s Borderlands

“In the movie Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”
