After years in on again, off again development, a Duke Nukem movie is finally taking shape at Legendary Entertainment, we’ve learned via The Hollywood Reporter this afternoon.

“Cobra Kai” creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are producing the feature film adaptation of the popular video game series for Legendary, THR reports.

The website reminds, “Launched with a self-titled debut in 1991 from Apogee Software, later called 3D Realms, Nukem is $1 billion video game franchise that began life as a platform game for personal computers. When the third game, Duke Nukem 3D, came out in 1996, it became not only a critical hit but one that helped usher in the ubiquity of first-person games for years to come. After laying low for years and stalled development, the franchise came back in 2011, after Gearbox acquired 3D Realms, with Duke Nukem Forever.”

Inspired by movie heroes including John Nada and Ash Williams, the title character is an action hero badass who often spends his time killing aliens that have invaded Earth. The first movie adaptation nearly happened in the late ’90s, with John Cena more recently attached to a different iteration of a Duke Nukem movie that also never ended up coming to life.

At this time, the Duke Nukem movie doesn’t have a writer or director attached.
