Paranormal Activity 8

Once upon a time, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension was positioned as the final film in the found footage franchise, but that was before Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin brought the franchise back to life on Paramount+ last Halloween. Next of Kin was the seventh installment in the franchise, and it looks like the eighth installment won’t be too far behind.

Variety ran a brand new interview with Jason Blum over the weekend, and included within that article is the mention of a mysterious new installment in the Paranormal Activity saga.

The website reports, “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin premiered in 2021, with another installment currently eyeing a 2023 release.” Interesting to note, that eighth movie is also currently listed on Wikipedia, under the title Paranormal Activity: The Other Side.

Wikipedia indicates that Paranormal Activity 8 will return to the original storyline…

The Other Side will feature four young friends who move into Katie and Kristi’s childhood house together before college starts, only to discover the gruesome past of their home and it’s connection to the 1988 incidents. Set in the 1990s, it will reportedly address the fire that destroyed the property which has only been mentioned briefly in a few past installments.”

Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) reportedly wrote the script, with Wincent Sommers (Slender Man: Origins) directing. Again, this is according to Wikipedia, rather than an official report.

The cast for Paranormal Activity 8 reportedly includes Sonja Gerhardt, Chethrin Schulze, Nika Sofie, Tamara Hitz, Chany Dakota, Leon Pelz. Stay tuned for more info as we learn it.

UPDATE: 8/8/2022, 5pm EST: Franchise creator Oren Peli has taken to Twitter to let us know that an eighth film is currently NOT in the works at this time, despite reports today.

Peli tweets, “There are stories coming out about sequels in the works. Those are listed on IMDB as Paranormal Activity 8, remake, etc. Those are not real sequels.”

“We have nothing to do with them, and do not know these people who claim to be making these films,” Peli adds, suggesting the franchise has no current plans for new sequels.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

‘Ready or Not’: Radio Silence Filmmakers Tease the “Absolute Banger” of a Sequel That’s Taking Shape

It was first reported a couple weeks ago that Ready or Not 2 is now in development, with Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Insidious: The Last Key, Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions) in talks to direct the sequel to the 2019 box office hit. Additionally, we had learned that Samara Weaving would be returning to star.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Ready or Not directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin in the wake of those reports, and we’ve now got an update straight from the source.

“It’s getting figured out. That’s what we’ll say: Ready or Not 2 is getting figured out,” Gillett tells EW, confirming last month’s report. “What we can say is that there is a script that is an absolute fucking banger of a sequel. And however it gets made, and in whatever capacity we are helping get it made, we are so excited that it’s happening.”

“I don’t think we knew after making [Ready or Not] that there would be so much story left to tell,” Gillett continues. “We’re so proud of what that first movie is, we’re so proud of what the sequel is. We’re just really excited, and fingers crossed that it gets made.” Bettinelli-Olpin adds, “And with Searchlight and Samara, they’re not gonna let it down.”

The first film introduced a mythology wherein the wealthy Le Domas family has made a deal with the devil, one that requires them to take part in bizarre – and deadly – wedding night traditions. There’s much that can be done with the premise going forward, even if the first movie ended with Weaving’s Grace massacring the family and burning down their estate.

Wikipedia reminds, “The sole survivor of the night, Grace walks out of the burning manor just as the police arrive. Upon asking her what happened, she simply replies: in-laws.”
