Boston Science Fiction Film Festival – Longest Running Genre Fest in America Returns This Week
The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival — the longest running genre fest in America — begins its 48th annual event this Wednesday, February 15, and runs through Sunday, February 19, in Somerville, MA.
The festivities include features, short film blocks, workshops, panels, parties, and special guests before concluding with the legendary 24-hour marathon.
Feature screenings include Doctor Who Am I, UFO Club, Beyond Tomorrow, It’s Quieter in the Twilight, Breaking Infinity, The Cold Dead Look In Your Eyes, The Mind Thief, The Bystanders, The Antares Paradox, Single8, Everyone Will Burn, Isaac Asimov: A Message to the Future, and the world premiere of The Warm Season. Several filmmakers will be in attendance for Q&As following their movies.
Kicking off on Sunday at noon, the 24-hour marathon features celluloid screenings of Back to the Future Part II (on 70mm), Alien, Escape from Planet of the Apes, Stargate, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, UFOria, and Future Kill, plus digital showings of the original Godzilla, Total Recall, Bill & Ted Face the Music, After Yang, and more.
A masterclass with editor Duwayne Dunham (Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Twin Peaks) and a two-part panel with fabricators Jason Kaufman (Starship Troopers, Star Trek), Brad Elliott (Avatar: The Way of Water, Obi-Wan), Tamara Carlson Woodard (The Mandalorian, Avengers: Endgame), and Giang Pham (Venom, Jurassic World) are among the panel highlights.
Other events include a conversation with animation editors Joe Elwood and Nate Cormier; Asimov’s Robots, an experimental Clue-like mystery game; and The Time Traveler’s Ball celebrating 60 years of Doctor Who.
In addition to in-person happenings, a virtual component is available via Filmocracy. Some screenings are exclusively virtual, like the SCREAMBOX Original All Jacked Up and Full of Worms.
Boston SciFi tickets are on sale now starting at $15 per event or $195 for a festival pass. Virtual access is only $9.99.
The new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the upcoming Weapons is assembling an impressive cast, with Josh Brolin (Dune 2) and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) recently signing on. Deadline reports today that Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear) is the latest actor to join the cast of Cregger’s new movie.
The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.
The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”
Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”
Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
