Megalomaniac

The ultra-violent horror movie Megalomaniac (read Meagan’s review) premiered at Fantasia last year, and the film is being released in theaters by Dark Star Pictures this September.

Megalomaniac comes to US theaters on September 8, 2023.

Winner of the top Jury Prize (Best Feature) at the Fantasia Film Festival, this brutal and dark serial killer film utilizes the backdrop of an unsolved true crime.

With Megalomaniac, prolific filmmaker Karim Ouelhaj, Méliès d’Or winner for The Frozen Eye (2016), brings us his fourth feature and by far his most savage.

In the film, “Martha and Félix are the children of the Butcher of Mons, a notorious Belgian serial killer from the 1990s. Unstable and riddled with insecurities, Martha lives vicariously through social media. Her brother, crushed by the family legacy, takes over their father’s killings. Harassed and violently assaulted at work, the docile Martha falls into madness and goes through the looking glass into the strange and terrifying world inhabited by her brother.”

Eline Schumacher, Wim Willaert, Benjamin Ramon, Pierre Nisse, and Raphaëlle Lubansu star.

“[They say] you keep thinking about it for days, it sticks to your skin and your brain,” said Ouelhaj to Variety. “I’m happy to hear it’s not forgettable. The only ones who are disappointed, which is rare, [come in] expecting an entertaining slasher.”

From Fantasia: “His sharp examination of societal anguish blends into this genre-adoring film that no horror devotee would dare miss. Carried by the breathtaking performance of lead actor Eline Schumacher and her descent into insanity, Megalomaniac digs deep into the sordid true story of Belgian serial killer, The Butcher of Mons. Megalomaniac is a nightmare of mystical violence anchored in the reality of female persecution and gendered abuse.”

Meagan wrote in her Fantasia review, “Megalomaniac yields extremism, confrontational horror that aims to offend as much as it does evoke wrath, and societal reflection.”

“It’s at once compelling and uncomfortable to watch,” she added.
