After terrifying audiences with Terrified back in 2017, filmmaker Demián Rugna is back with new horror movie When Evil Lurks, and a new poster and trailer unveiled today gives a glimpse at the putrid evil affecting a town and spreading shocking violence.

Shudder and IFC Films will be presenting When Evil Lurks in theaters on October 6, followed by the film’s Shudder premiere on October 27.

Check out the gnarly new trailer and poster below.

In the film, “a pair of brothers find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to suss it out. They soon learn that the odd happenings in their village are the cause of a spirit that’s found its way into a local man waiting for the proper protocols to rid his body of the festering demon. An escape attempt ensues as the film keeps its protagonists on edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the spirit’s relentless clutches.”

Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater and Marcelo Michinaux star.

Director Demián Rugna said in a statement, “Working with Shudder has been an incredible and seamless experience. They allowed me the creative space to direct freely with the same goal in mind – identify new ways to shock and scare audiences with an innovative approach and a fresh story.”

I said of the film in my review out of TIFF, “the Argentinian filmmaker shifts gears to take on possession horror unafraid to spill buckets of blood and jaw-dropping violence.”

As if that’s not intriguing enough, Deadline previously teased that “AMC Studios is currently looking to further expand the world of the film with a project for the small screen.” That means that the evil in Rugna’s latest may yet spill over onto TV.

“We are very excited to continue our collaboration with Shudder/IFC Films and were blown away by seeing this film from Argentina,” said Charades co-founders Pierre Mazars, Carole Baraton and Yohann Comte previously. “We can’t wait to see the reaction of the audience in Toronto.”

Shudder, Machaco Films and Aramos Cine joined forces to produce When Evil Lurks.

The new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the upcoming Weapons is assembling an impressive cast, with Josh Brolin (Dune 2) and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) recently signing on. Deadline reports today that Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear) is the latest actor to join the cast of Cregger’s new movie.

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
