‘The Soul Eater’ – New Image Teases Upcoming Grisly Horror from ‘Inside’ Directors

The Soul Eater

Up next from French filmmaking duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, best known for their ultra-violent slasher Inside and aquatic haunted house tale The Deep House, is an adaptation of grisly thriller The Soul Eater by Alexis Laipsker. Thanks to Deadline, a new image teases the eerie horror feature.

Maury announced production on the film earlier this year via Instagram, the seventh feature film for Maury and Bustillo.

In The Soul Eater, “The chilling drama unfolds against the backdrop of a mountain village where an old legend about a malevolent creature resurfaces following the disappearance of local children and a series of violent and gruesome deaths.”

The directors reteam with Kandisha cinematographer Simon Roca for their latest.

Virginie Ledoyen (Rabid DogsThe Beach), Paul Hamy (Get In), and Sandrine Bonnaire star.

The novel’s official synopsis also indicates another bloody genre film for the filmmakers:

“‘He didn’t scream. They never scream.’ Some well-kept secrets sometimes turn out to be too heavy to bear. When the disappearance of children and bloody murders multiply uneventfully in a small mountain village, an old legend shrouded in sulfur resurfaces. Urged on by their respective departments, Commander Guardiano and Captain of the Gendarmerie De Rolan are forced to join forces to discover the truth.”

The Soul Eater is produced by Phase 4 Productions and Place du Marché Productions and will receive a theatrical release in France.

Deadline reports that Paris-based WTFilms has boarded The Soul Eater ahead of next week’s American Film Market, where they’ll screen a promo of the film. It’s currently in post-production, which means news of The Soul Eater‘s release plan likely isn’t far behind.

WTFilms is also behind recent festival darling Infested, previously titled Vermin. Trace Thurman said in his review out of Fantastic Fest, “Vaniček has crafted what is possibly the best “when spiders attack” movie in over 30 years, and that is no small feat. Infested, for lack of a better phrase, has plenty of bite.”

The new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the upcoming Weapons is assembling an impressive cast, with Josh Brolin (Dune 2) and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) recently signing on. Deadline reports today that Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear) is the latest actor to join the cast of Cregger’s new movie.

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
