Charles Martin Smith TRICK OR TREAT on SCREAMBOX

Today is of course Halloween and we just wanted to take a minute to remind you that the 1986 cult classic Trick or Treat is now streaming on the BD-powered SCREAMBOX!

This marks the first time the new restoration from Synapse Films has EVER been seen, and it’s also the first time the movie has EVER made its way onto a streaming service.

It’s our Halloween treat to you. Stream Trick or Treat exclusively on SCREAMBOX tonight!

Back in 1986, director Charles Martin Smith introduced the world to rocker Sammi Curr in Trick or Treat, which has gone on to become a true cult classic over the years.

Red Shirt Pictures recently acquired the incredibly rare horror gem and provided it with a brand new 4K restoration that will receive a 4K UHD & Blu-ray Special Edition at a later date.

Expect that release soon from Synapse Films. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

The first feature from award-winning filmmaker Charles Martin Smith (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), the film featured a cast of soon to be household names including Marc Price (“Family Ties”) and Doug Savant (“Melrose Place”). Alongside rock icons Gene Simmons and Ozzy OsbourneTrick or Treat blends the best of the 1980s metal scene with the decade’s tongue and cheek take on the genre.

Nearly four decades after its release, the film’s nostalgic nuance still resonates, with Cinelipsis declaring “Trick or Treat spells ‘FUN’ with an awesome story of fandom, satanism, and the power of 80s music.” And Juicy Cerebellum adding “I loved metal music when this came out, hence I loved the film.”

This Halloween it’s PARTY TIME. Following the death of his heavy metal idol, a bullied teenage boy inadvertently discovers away to resurrect the rocker. After hearing the news of his hero’s death, Eddie Weinbauer (Price) finds himself in possession of a one-of-a-kind item, the final recording of Sammi Curr. While, at first, the record seems like a godsend, things quickly turn when he discovers its sinister secret. Played a certain way, it has the power to bring the demonic rocker back from the dead and unleash heavy metal Hell on those who get in his way.

The cult classic was written by genre heavyweights Michael S. Murphy (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2), Joel Soisson (Dracula 2000) and Rhet Topham (Freddy’s Nightmares). Trick or Treat also features Emmy Nominee Glen Morgan (The X-Files), Elaine Joyce (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Clare Torao (Cujo); along with its incredible cast, the film would go on to set the bar for horror cameos going forward. The film was produced by Murphy and Soisson, who would go on to collaborate on Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Blue Desert and Modern Love.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

The Birthday Murders: Viral Marketing Website Launches for ‘Longlegs’

Published

on

NEON has been absolutely slaying the marketing game for their horror output this year, and they’re kicking the Longlegs campaign into high gear with one more month until release.

A cryptic ad in The Seattle Times today (seen below) has led clever horror fans to discover TheBirthdayMurders.net, the brand new official viral marketing website for Longlegs.

The in-universe website details the victims of the serial killer known as Longlegs (Nicolas Cage), described as a “Satan-worshipping psycho” who has terrorized families throughout the Pacific Northwest for nearly three decades.

The website details, “A bloody trail of bodies here in the great state of Oregon attests to the depraved savagery of this one-of-a-kind serial killer. With over three dozen victims that we know of, LONGLEGS is one of the most prolific mass murderers ever to have graced the region, and his gruesome endeavors are the stuff of nightmares. At first, all of the killings appeared to be straightforward murder-suicides: the handiwork of average men who suddenly snapped and slaughtered their wives and children. But a series of eerie coded messages left at the crime scenes indicate that someone – or something – is influencing these horrific crimes. The cryptic letters are signed by someone calling himself LONGLEGS.”

“With thirty-eight kills to his name, LONGLEGS has torn apart the lives of eleven different families throughout the Beaver State. His victims were good people: honest fathers, decent mothers, innocent little children.”

The website is loaded with secrets, clues, and gruesome (faux) crime scene photos, and you might even find a mention of yours truly nestled in there. Poke around. Stay a while.

Longlegs arrives in theaters July 12.

The upcoming serial killer horror movie marks the return of director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.

In the film, “FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.

The film is rated “R” for “Bloody violence, disturbing images and some language.”
