Talk to Me horror

Here on Bloody Disgusting we’ve published several articles (find them all here) covering *our* favorite horror movies of last year, but it’s always interesting to take a look at year-in-review roundups from other places as well. Letterboxd, for example, kicks off each new year by spotlighting the previous year’s top hits, and their full 2023 Year in Review is now live.

As always, films are broken up into various categories based on highest user ratings, including the 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2023. It’s hardly surprising that the list is topped by horror hits including Talk to Me, When Evil Lurks, and Scream VI, but there are also several films on the list that you probably wouldn’t expect – and maybe haven’t even heard of.

Here are Letterboxd’s 10 Highest Rated Horror Movies of 2023…

  • 10) Huesera: The Bone Woman
  • 9) The Passenger
  • 8) Birth/Rebirth
  • 7) Vincent Must Die
  • 6) Scream VI
  • 5) Romancham
  • 4) Sleep
  • 3) Infested
  • 2) When Evil Lurks
  • 1) Talk to Me

Other horror-adjacent films including Godzilla Minus One and Poor Things pop up on other lists, with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things in the #2 spot on the list of Highest Rated Overall for 2023. Godzilla Minus One made the same list, finding itself in the #7 spot.

Godzilla Minus One is also the #1 highest rated movie of 2023 in the Action/Adventure category, while Poor Things is last year’s #1 highest rated movie in the Comedy category.

Poor Things is also found in the #1 spot on the Highest Rated Fantasy films list, while Ari Aster’s nightmare comedy Beau is Afraid came in at #10 on the very same Fantasy list.

And then there’s the Highest Rated Sci-fi list, which includes Poor Things at #1, Godzilla Minus One at #2, Shin Kamen Rider at #7, and The Artifice Girl at #10.

The horror genre has a few entries on the Most Popular – Women Directors list, with Five Nights at Freddy’s at #5, Cocaine Bear at #6, and the slasher Totally Killer at #9.

Bloody Disgusting’s SCREAMBOX Original horror movie The Outwaters made the cut for Most Divisive Movies of 2023, finding itself on the list alongside buzzed about horror movies including Skinamarink, Slotherhouse, Nefarious, and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
