‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Director Explains How “The Real Ghostbusters” Inspired New Movie!

One of the biggest new releases headed our way here in the first quarter of 2024 is of course Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which will release in theaters on March 22, 2024.

The film’s trailers have revealed that Frozen Empire will bring a new threat and new mythology into the mix, as opposed to Afterlife‘s adherence to the iconic specters of the past.

The new movie is inspired not by the original, but rather an ’80s animated series!

Speaking with Empire Magazine this week, director Gil Kenan (Monster House) has revealed that the beloved animated series “The Real Ghostbusters” inspired his fresh vision!

We wanted to bring that show’s looseness and fearlessness to this movie,” Kenan explains to Empire. “I think it’s going to surprise people just how big this film is.”

Kenan also notes that “The Real Ghostbusters” featured “wild, original and weird-as-fuck villains” – indeed it did! – so we can expect to see some inspiration there as well.

The cast includes Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind, alongside Bill Murray, Finn Wolfhard, Ernie Hudson, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, Dan Aykroyd and Carrie Coon.
