Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond’ – World Premiere of New 4K Restoration Coming to Overlook Film Festival

The Overlook Film Festival returns to New Orleans, Louisiana from April 4 – April 7 (browse the full lineup here), with hot new genre movies including Cuckoo, I Saw the TV Glow, and Abigail set to show fans what the horror genre is made of here in 2024. But it’s not just brand new movies that are world premiering at the Overlook Film Festival next month.

This year’s Overlook Film Festival will also play host to the world premiere of Grindhouse Releasing’s brand new 4K restoration of the Lucio Fulci horror classic, The Beyond!

The festival previews, “Lucio Fulci, the Giallo maestro himself, sets his sights on the bayou with his propulsive, brain-melting nightmare of psychedelia. Shot entirely in and around New Orleans, and driven by one of the all-time great Fabio Frizzi scores, Grindhouse Releasing’s brand new restoration is mandatory big-screen viewing.”

The 1981 Italian horror classic from master of horror Lucio Fulci stars Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar.

In the film, “A woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural accidents, she learns the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.”

Meagan Navarro wrote about The Beyond earlier this year, “One of Lucio Fulci’s most beloved horror films and the second entry in his unofficial “Gates of Hell” trilogy, The Beyond is also the director’s most influential. Bleak, surreal, and dreamlike in its storytelling, The Beyond toes the line between beauty and horror.”

“Essentially, The Beyond is what happens when you cross Fulci with H.P. Lovecraft,” Meagan continued. “The result is a foreboding, apocalyptic horror movie with a tangible sense of doom.”

The new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the upcoming Weapons is assembling an impressive cast, with Josh Brolin (Dune 2) and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) recently signing on. Deadline reports today that Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear) is the latest actor to join the cast of Cregger’s new movie.

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
