‘Dancing Village: The Curse Begins’ – Headline-Making Indonesian Horror Movie Finds a Home at Lionsgate
Indonesian filmmaker Kimo Stamboel (Macabre, Headshot, The Queen of Black Magic) is back in the director’s chair for MD Pictures’ Badarawuhi Di Desa Penari (aka Dancing Village: The Curse Begins), a prequel to the record-breaking hit KKN Curse Of The Dancing Village that will be the first production in Southeast Asia to be filmed with IMAX-certified digital cameras.
Ahead of the film’s wide IMAX release across Indonesia, which begins April 10, Deadline has announced this morning that Lionsgate has scooped up the domestic rights.
“This collaboration represents a leap forward for the Indonesian movie industry on the global stage. We believe that entertainment transcends language and cultural barriers, and we are confident that through this partnership we will be able to showcase the richness of Indonesian culture to the American audience and beyond,” said Manoj Punjabi, CEO and founder of MD Pictures.
“With this exciting collaboration with MD Pictures, we are breaking ground by releasing our first Indonesian film, proving our continued commitment to visionary filmmaking on a global scale,” said Helen Lee-Kim, President of the International Motion Picture Group at Lionsgate. “We are thrilled to be partners with Manoj and MD Pictures on this film and excited to celebrate its release.”
“The film is again set in a remote Indonesian village where a mysterious local entity is terrorizing the local population,” Deadline had recently noted in a previous report.
Aulia Sarah, Maudy Effrosina, Jourdy Pranata and Claresta Taufan star.

The filmmakers behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are expanding their public domain horror universe with a handful of upcoming “Poohniverse” movies, including Bambi: The Reckoning, Pinocchio: Unstrung, and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.
Variety has scored the first image from Neverland Nightmare, seen above.
The website details, “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare follows Wendy Darling as she strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from ‘the clutches of the evil Peter Pan.’ Along the way she meets Tinkerbell, who in this twisted version of the story will be seen taking heroine, convinced that it’s pixie dust.”
Scott Jeffrey will direct Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, expected Halloween 2024.
Jeffrey tells us, “I am taking inspiration from French cinema while in prep for this movie. The film will be incredibly tense. I would say it’s a mesh between Switchblade Romance and The Black Phone with our own spin on it. It is a nasty, violent and incredibly dark movie.”
Megan Placito has joined the cast as Wendy Darling, Kit Green is Tinkerbell, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney (The Pope’s Exorcist) is Michael Darling and Charity Kase (RuPaul Drag Race) is James. Martin Portlock will be playing the twisted version of Peter Pan.
Created by J.M. Barrie way back in 1902, the character of Peter Pan – like Winnie the Pooh – is in the public domain, even if the iconic Disney iteration of the character is very much not.
