In the wake of Nickelodeon’s live action Monster High: The Movie and its sequel last year, a brand new live action Monster High movie is now in the works at Universal Pictures.
Variety reports this afternoon that Mattel, Inc. has partnered with Universal Pictures on the upcoming movie, with writer/producer Akiva Goldsman on board the project.
The upcoming live action theatrical film is said to feature “an original story based on the popular fashion dolls imagined as the children of legendary monsters.”
“’Monster High’ helps fans discover the great beauty in being true to yourself and celebrates the unique sensibilities at the core of who we are as individuals,” Mattel Films president Robbie Brenner said. “We’re proud to partner with Universal Pictures and the brilliant Akiva Goldsman to usher this important message to audiences worldwide.”
Goldsman added, “I’ve been fascinated by ‘Monster High’ since my daughters were obsessed with the dolls as kids. I’m thrilled to once again join forces with Robbie Brenner and our friends at Mattel to help bring this iconic property to life.”
Created by Garrett Sander, Kellee Riley and Glen Hanson, the Monster High toy line was launched by Mattel in 2010. In addition to the two aforementioned movies, which premiered on Paramount+, the “Monster High” brand has also spawned various animated TV specials, movies, and shows. Universal’s new project will be the first ever big screen adventure.
