Shudder’s ‘The Devil’s Bath’ Gets Re-Release After Selected as Austria’s Academy Award Submission
Shudder is re-releasing Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala‘s period feature The Devil’s Bath for a North American theatrical run next week. The special theatrical run comes after the film was selected as Austria’s Academy Award submission.

Shot on 35mm, The Devil’s Bath is based on historical records, and the film debuted at Berlinale this year where it was awarded a Silver Bear for Martin Schlacht’s cinematography.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for the German-language horror movie: “In 1750 Austria, a deeply religious woman named Agnes has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison.”
Anja Plaschg, David Scheid, Maria Hofstätter, Camilla Schielin, and Lorenz Tröbinger star.
The Devil’s Bath is deeply rooted in history and historical accounts, but it’s a fictionalized depiction that gave the filmmakers some creative leeway. Though they did their extensive research for authenticity.
“We did a huge amount of research,“ Fiala previously told Bloody Disgusting. “There were actually three historians involved, researching different aspects of life back then. Like, let’s say, medical procedures, approach to religion, daily life, and exorcism. All of that stuff has been researched, but there are not too many sources because history was not too interested in the specifics of ordinary people and women’s history. That automatically created some leeway because there are so few sources that our historians said, ‘It could have been like that, and maybe this is just a singular event,‘ so you are free as long as it feels like we had so much information that I think we were able to judge if it felt plausible or not. If it felt plausible, that was in some cases good enough for us because there is no way of 100% saying it was like that or it was not.”
The Devil’s Bath is produced by Heimatfilm Productions and Ulrich Seidl Productions as a co-production with Heimatfilm and Coop99 Filmproduktion.

Christopher Landon to Helm Feature Adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s ‘The Final Girl Support Group’
A new feature adaptation of author Grady Hendrix‘s slasher book The Final Girl Support Group is now on the way from Paramount Pictures, and Deadline reports that it’s found its director in Christopher Landon (Drop, Happy Death Day).
The two previously collaborated on My Best Friend’s Exorcism.
In The Final Girl Support Group, “Lynette is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece.”
“But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.”
I wrote in my novel review for BD, “Hendrix puts his characters through the absolute wringer. It’s a bloody, vicious voyage for the flawed heroine, both physically and emotionally. In terms of action and horror, Support Group delivers breakneck pacing and thrills.”
Five years ago, Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti (Mama, It, It Chapter Two) were attached to produce a planned series adaptation for HBO Max alongside Charlize Theron. While Theron is no longer producing, the Muschiettis remain on board under their Double Dream label.
Paramount Pictures is also developing Hendrix’s sci-fi novella, BadAsstronauts.
