Ryan Gosling Reportedly Producing ‘Killer Klowns from Outer Space’ Reboot for Amazon?!
We’ve been waiting a long time on the return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space, with a proposed television series, an announced 3D sequel, and even a planned SYFY Original movie coming and going over the years. None of those projects ever ended up seeing the light of day, of course, with the original ’80s movie only spawning a video game follow-up at this time.
But it sounds like the Killer Klowns may be gearing up for their long-awaited return to the screen, with reporter Jeff Sneider breaking a wild scoop late last night on The InSneider.
According to Sneider’s report, which you can read in full behind a paywall, Ryan Gosling is on board to produce a new Killer Klowns from Outer Space project for Amazon MGM Studios?!
Sneider describes the project as a “remake” of the 1988 horror-comedy that was created, written and directed by the Chiodo Bros, which of course centered on killer clowns who came down from outer space in a big top spaceship to terrorize a small town with their popcorn guns, cotton candy cocoons, acid pies, and various other unique implements of destruction.
Amazon has controlled the rights to the Killer Klowns property ever since the company acquired movie studio MGM back in 2022, rebranding the studio to Amazon MGM Studios.
The Chiodo Brothers have been trying to get a franchise continuation off the ground since way back in the late 1980s when the original movie came out, with the property’s popularity growing in more recent years thanks to an endless stream of merchandise and prime product placement on Spirit Halloween’s shelves each and every Halloween season. It would seem the Killer Klowns are closer than ever to returning to our lives, and perhaps Ryan Gosling is the guy to make it happen. Stay tuned for more on this wild rumor as we learn it!
Stephen Chiodo had explained back in 2021, “We have been trying to get the sequel going since 1988. And Hollywood is just a horrible machine. The film didn’t really get much box office… and when you want to get a sequel done, they look at the box office. They don’t regard cult films as something to invest in.”
He continued, “We have this whole long trilogy – something we call a trilogy in four parts because we include the original – a TV series for cable [or] streaming. It follows the adventures of all the characters as they go through their lives, crushed after the first invasion. It would make a great mini-series. So we’re constantly selling that for people who are interested.”
Theo James Krekis‘ short film Jealous People are Ugly People premiered earlier this year at SXSW and has since inspired a massive bidding war for its feature film expansion.
New Line Cinema has emerged victorious in the latest feeding frenzy over next-generation digital horror IP and its creators, Deadline reports.
Krekis will adapt Jealous People are Ugly People, directing from his own script.
In the short film, “Vasilly has become painfully jealous of his best friend, Luke. But things aren’t going so well for Luke. Every time he shares some good news, he starts to suffer from strange and violent repercussions. Disturbed by the uncanny timing, Vasilly recalls his Yiayia’s warnings about the Greek superstition of the evil eye – and starts to believe his own envy might be to blame for Luke’s bad luck.”
SXSW described the short film as ” a darkly comic psychological thriller about male jealousy, inherited superstition, and the corrosive power of repressed ambition.”
Jennifer Monks and Michelle Stein will produce the feature take alongside Isaac Klausner, John Fischer, Ben Levine and Ethan Cappello. Josh Mack and Lauren Botchan are overseeing for New Line.
Jealous People are Ugly People joins New Line’s upcoming horror slate that also includes Santiago Menghini’s The Revenge of La Llorona on February 26, 2027, and The Conjuring: First Communion on September 10, 2027.
